Guidance Launch: Fire Sprinklers for Low Carbon Buildings

Date: Thursday 10th December 2026   Time: 17:00-19:30   Location: London EC1N

Overview

This international guidance is relevant to all those specifying, designing, procuring, protecting, and insuring materially low carbon buildings and details the potential benefits that the inclusion of a fire sprinkler system from design inception can afford all stakeholders.

Why water-based fire suppression supports net zero goals

  • Their inclusion supports the use of natural materials in construction
  • Fires release large amounts of carbon and often force demolition
  • Early suppression uses very small amounts of water, exactly where needed
  • Preventing rebuild preserves embodied carbon already stored in timber and other materials
  • Less fire damage means less waste, fewer replacement materials, and faster recovery

We touch on the upfront embodied carbon of sprinkler systems and present an example case study, kindly supplied by Patron member Mclaren, with calculations from Max Fordham.

The Guidance is supported by The International Fire Suppression Alliance and the European Fire Sprinkler Alliance
