ASBP and the Finishes and Interiors Sector (FIS) are pleased to announce the publication of three new summary guides from our Reuse of Doors deep dive. These concise, practical documents have been developed to help organisations across the construction supply chain identify and deliver more opportunities for door reuse, helping to reduce waste, retain value and cut embodied carbon.
Doors are frequently removed during refurbishment projects long before they have reached the end of their service life. Our research suggests that around 470,000 doors are removed from offices in England and Wales each year, presenting a significant opportunity for greater reuse, repair, refurbishment and component recovery. The new summaries show how better design, specification, deconstruction and information management can help unlock this potential.
The three summaries are aimed at different audiences:
- Design for Reuse – guidance for door manufacturers on designing products for durability, repairability, disassembly and future reuse.
- Specify/Procure for Reuse – guidance for clients, designers and contractors on creating demand for reused doors and embedding reuse into project decision-making.
- Deconstruct for Reuse – guidance for auditors, strip-out and demolition contractors on recovering doors and components without unnecessarily damaging their reuse potential.
These summaries provide an introduction to the key findings and recommendations from the project, while the full Reuse of Doors guidance document, containing detailed evidence, case studies and technical recommendations, will be published later this autumn.
