From Demolition to Deconstruction: How the construction industry can reduce carbon emissions through deconstruction and reuse

Date: Thursday 10th October 2024   Time: 09:30-15:30   Location: Sparks, Bristol

This event is part of ASBP’s Reuse Now Campaign. Find out more here.

Join us as we explore the future of sustainable construction. This event focuses on maximizing finite resources and reducing carbon emissions through large-scale reuse. Engage in insightful discussions and interactive workshops that address the challenges and opportunities in reusing building products and materials, particularly from the perspective of moving away from demolition and towards more deconstruction. Hear from innovative practitioners currently leading the way in reuse, with presentations, compelling case studies, and dynamic Q&A sessions. Be part of an exciting journey towards a more sustainable construction industry.

This event, hosted alongside the Green Register, is part of ASBP’s Reuse Now Campaign, and the DISRUPT 2 project, which is working with the Institute of Demolition Engineers to further explore the innovative reuse of structural steel in construction and enable more steel to be reclaimed and reused from refurbishment and demolition projects.

About the Reuse Now Campaign

The construction industry accounts for over a third of global carbon emissions and produces around 60 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste annually in the UK. Whilst much of this is recovered and recycled, only a small percentage is reused. This creates a significant opportunity to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint, minimise waste and deliver cost efficiencies. Estimates suggest that by increasing our reuse of construction products, 22.3 MtCO2e of GHG emissions could be saved during the UK’s fourth and fifth carbon budgets between 2023 and 2034.

The “Reuse Now” Campaign aims to drive change in the built environment sector by:

  • Raising Awareness across the supply chain about the significant environmental benefits of reusing building products, including waste reduction, carbon reduction and economic benefits.
  • Sharing Knowledge through practical, interactive workshops, events, and online resources.
  • Fostering Collaboration with stakeholders from across industry to build a robust knowledge sharing network that ensures the availability and accessibility of high-quality reused products.
  • Showcasing Success Stories that have successfully embraced reused building products and prove that lower carbon supply chain models not only benefit the environment but can also offer economic advantages and innovative design possibilities.
