A knowledge exchange event on mass timber construction brought to you by the Alliance for Sustainable Buildings Products (ASBP) and natureplus in partnership with the Laudes Foundation. We were joined by experts from Germany and the UK to discuss the barriers to mass timber construction and how to overcome them, including insurance, fire and water-related challenges.

13.20 Designing in mass timber – Jeroen Meissner, Partner and Partner

Jereon completed his architecture studies at TU-Berlin, and following roles at several offices has been Project Manager at Partner and Partner Architects since 2013. As a leading figure in the team, he develops and researches holistic, circular and structural solutions with a focus on renewable raw materials for the necessary transformation towards a post-fossil society. Most recently, he headed the DBU research project on the climate and resource-positive building principle WOODSCRAPER.

13.35 Mass timber, insurance and fire/water – Reinhard Eberl-Pacan, brandschutz plus GmbH

Reinhard has worked as a freelance architect with a focus on timber construction since completing his studies in 1990. In 2007 he undertook further training to become a planner and expert for preventative fire protection and since 2019 has been chairman of the federal association of specialist planners and experts in preventive fire protection (BFSB). In addition to lecturing, Reinhard writes books and specialist articles on architecture, timber construction and fire protection. He runs an office in Berlin with 11 employees that deals with preventive fire protection and in particular with fire protection in timber construction.

13.50 Supporting the timber industry and the work of the Timber Construction Initiative – Jan Bulmer, Ministry of Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection, Baden-Wuerttemberg

The federal state of Baden-Württemberg is setting the trends for a climate-friendly and innovative building culture, and Jan is the coordinator of the Baden-Württemberg timber construction initiative. He specialises in forest & wood products, sustainable building, building culture and architecture and is also an apprentice carpenter, with a B.Sc. in Forest Engineering and M.Sc. in Forest Products.

14.10 Mass timber and construction/building insurance in the UK – Dominic Lion, Gallagher

Dominic is an Associate Director and Head of New Business within the Real Estate division of Gallagher, a global insurance broker. He represents the insurance sector on a number of cross-industry bodies focussed on breaking down the barriers to the adoption of mass timber in our built environment, and has been involved in the placement of the insurances for a number of the larger mass timber developments in the UK.

14.25 Structure and fire protection. A solution for residential developments, with fire stopping checks in the factory – Kelly Harrison, Whitby Wood

Kelly Harrison is a leader in the industry’s move to sustainable construction. She is particularly experienced in the design of timber and hybrid structures, refurbishment and retro-fitting, and working in heritage contexts. Kelly is a Member of the Board of the Timber Development UK (TDUK), and is an active participant in their University Engagement, Sustainability and Circular Economy Groups. She also speaks at conferences and symposia, nationally and internationally.

14:40 The Golden Thread: End to End Quality Assurance in mass timber buildings, from early design to compliant delivery – Adedayo ShittuBalogun, EURBAN

Adedayo is a UK-trained and registered Architect with over 10 years’ experience in Architectural Practice. She also holds a Masters in Project and Enterprise Management from the Bartlett School of Architecture. Adedayo now leads the Project Management team at Eurban and is responsible for managing and delivering a range of project typologies from design through to assembly.
