An insulation product that speaks to the circular economy, with additional social value, with good thermal and acoustic properties, combined with the ease of use and pleasure in handling, all combine to make this the ASBP Product of the Month for March 2017. Most of us have a favourite pair of old jeans that are just so comfortable, they’re like a second skin. But there comes a time, when even these have to go. A social enterprise in Sheffield is working with another social enterprise in France, Le Relais to convert clothing comfort into thermal and acoustic comfort. The team collect unwanted garments, with the old jeans separated, shredded, the studs and zips recycled and the fabric pulled apart and turned into insulation. 3 pairs of jeans are enough to produce an insulation bat (0.6m X 1.2m X 100mm thick).
Inno-Therm®/Metisse® is available in flexible batts, rolls or can be blown in. It’s itch-free and very flexible, so ideal for uneven surfaces or wonky beams. It was selected by NBC for their studio at the London Olympic Games in 2012 for its excellent acoustic attenuation and ease of handing. It was then re-used at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
The acoustic properties made a big improvement to our editing rooms. Being a light, thick, dense and absorbent material helped to catch stray audio waveforms.”

It was again specified by NBC at Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games in 2018. It’s acoustic properties make it a favoured product for music studios. The 20mm acoustic is used by Amina Technologies in their wall invisible speaker systems and by Panel UK in their acoustic screen systems.
Inno-Therm®/Metisse® has been installed in numerous new build homes, retrofits, schools and colleges in the UK and France and was selected by Kevin McCloud as Eco-Innovation Green Hero in 2014. It is a favoured product of ASBP members’ Conker Conservation, as they are just across the channel. The hygroscopic properties of Inno-Therm®/Metisse® helps to moderate internal humidity levels. Maintaining relative humidity between 40-60 RH has many benefits, not least reducing the risk of condensation, mould growth and dust mites.

As a social enterprise, a proportion of sales income is donated to the education charity, Schools & Homes Energy Education, to conduct renewable and energy efficiency activities. An education resource has been developed (the HOT BOX) to encourage students to investigate concepts of heat transfer.
