Reducing Plastics in Construction Summit

Date: Tuesday 16th July 2024   Time: 14:00-16:00   Location: Online (Zoom)

Plastic plays a significant role in the construction sector, with studies indicating that the UK generates 55,000 tonnes of plastic waste from construction annually, of which less than half is recycled. This Plastic Free July, delve into the latest findings, initiatives, and strategies aimed at minimising, reusing, and recycling plastics within the industry. Additionally, we’ll gain insights from experts investigating the impact of this plastic on our health, well-being, and environment. Our speakers will underscore the urgency for action and the summit will provide actionable solutions and opportunities to begin stemming the plastic tide.

We’re thrilled to announce the return of ASBP’s Innovation Pitch! This competition for innovators, startups, and manufacturers who are introducing new product lines or services, particularly those offering alternatives to traditional plastic building materials and packaging. Whether in the early stages of development, market-ready, or recently launched, we welcome a spectrum of innovations. At the Plastics Summit, finalists will showcase their ideas, and attendees will have the opportunity to vote for the ultimate winner!

We need to keep tackling the plastics problem head on

The plastics problem poses significant threats to both human health and well-being. The widespread over-use and improper disposal of plastics contribute to environmental degradation, contaminating water sources, soil, and air. Microplastics, tiny particles derived from plastic breakdown, have been found in drinking water, seafood, and even the air we breathe, raising concerns about their potential health impacts. Moreover, plastic waste negatively impacts wildlife, ecosystems, and economies, exacerbating social inequalities and economic disparities. Addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts to reduce plastic consumption, improve waste management systems, and promote sustainable alternatives to safeguard both human and environmental health.
