This online webinar looks at the use of natural materials to build to the Passivhaus standard. Speakers include ASBP Board Member, Seb Laan Lomas of Architype, Tabitha Binding of Passivhaus Trust, and Grain Architecture’s Janna Laan Lomas and Andy Hales.
The Passivhaus standard and the use of biobased materials can be divisive topics, but by embracing and bringing both together, we can significantly reduce operational and embodied carbon emissions. This approach can lead to the creation of healthy, comfortable, and energy-efficient homes that are long-lived and sequester carbon in the building fabric for much longer than the materials took to grow.
Janna and Seb are personally investing in the construction of their lifetime home. Janna has always dreamed of designing and building a home made from natural materials, while Seb, though supportive of this vision, is focused on ensuring the house will be both low-carbon and energy-efficient. To achieve this, he insisted that the home be designed and certified to meet either the Passivhaus Classic or Plus standard. The result is a concrete-free, timber-framed home insulated with cellulose, wood fibre, and hemp, and finished externally with lime render and internally with clay plaster. The home incorporates reclaimed materials such as slate, floorboards, and bathroom fixtures, as well as ‘waste’ and offcuts from nearby building sites.
Andy, the delivery architect responsible for bringing their vision to life, faces the challenge of translating these ideas into a reality using the Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP), while ensuring the project meets the rigorous standards required for Passivhaus certification.
