Why Reuse Now…? In the next 10 minutes globally:
We will extract 50,000 tonnes of iron ore.
5 million bricks will be produced.
The construction, demolition, and excavation industry will create 38,000 tonnes of waste.
The Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP) is leading a targeted effort to champion a circular economy through its Reuse Now campaign. This initiative promotes the reuse of construction materials and aims to enable uptake of reuse through collaboration and creation of resources for the industry.
Central to the campaign is collaboration with industry stakeholders, including developers, product suppliers and manufacturers, architects and more. ASBP is working to create a supportive framework that facilitates material reuse, including the development of a resource hub, which includes case studies, glossary, articles library and more. This is linked with promotion through events, webinars and workshops.
A series of focussed webinars has explored topics including Materials Reuse Digital Hubs, Material Passports, and Pre Demolition Audits, with experts from each area joining us to share their knowledge, and take part in dynamic Q&A sessions. You can catch up with our Reuse Now webinars here.
A recent workshop, ‘From Demolition to Deconstruction’, focused on the challenges and opportunities of reclaiming building products and materials from existing buildings and how better integrating the demolition industry can help to support deconstruction and reuse. Held earlier this year in March at the National Brownfield Institute in Wolverhampton, the event featured presentations, case studies, and interactive discussion groups. It also explored innovative reuse strategies for structural steel through the DISRUPT 2 (Delivering Innovative Steel ReUse ProjecT) project, in partnership with the Institute of Demolition Engineers.
The success of the event in Wolverhampton sees ASBP bringing the event to Bristol, taking place on Thursday 10th October 2024. Speakers are confirmed from Max Fordham, Materials in Mind, EMR, John F Hunt, and AR Demolition. You can register to take part here: https://asbp.org.uk/events/from-demolition-to-deconstruction-bristol.
ASBP is bringing together stakeholders involved in specific aspects of the construction industry or with specific product types, undertaking a series of ‘Deep Dives’, which aim to prioritise reuse and respond to industry needs. The first of these is partitions, which is already underway.
