Summary
Concrete is the second most used substance on the planet, behind only water. Globally, about 8-10 billion cubic meters of concrete are used each year resulting in 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere. Indeed about 8% of total global CO2 emissions are from concrete. In 2021, UK cement consumption amounted to 15.6 million metric tons, up from 12.4 million metric tons in 2014.
Typical foundations and ground floors use significant amounts of concrete and can contribute to around 25-30% of the total upfront carbon of the whole building. Using more innovative solutions such as ground screws for foundations is one of the ways of reducing this impact.
In this lunch and learn session with Craig White, CEO at Agile Properties, we will learned about Agile Properties’ focus on low carbon foundations, natural building systems, social value, biogenic carbon and modular construction and we will take a deep dive into one of their recent projects – Wolverley School Sports Pavillion.
