John leads the New Build Standards and Performance division within MHCLG which is responsible for the policy aspects of Building Regulations and, in particular, delivering the Future Homes and Buildings Standards. John’s team also monitors the Building Control processes including the new process for Higher Risk Buildings which is administered by the Building Safety Regulator. The division is also the focal point for cross-cutting net zero issues in the department.
Prior to working in government, John’s experience included various aspects of sustainable construction, eventually specialising in Passivhaus. An engineer by background, John’s approach to leading technical teams was forged by an early career in the Royal Navy.
