Concrete is the second most used substance on the planet, behind only water. Globally, about 8-10 billion cubic meters of concrete are used each year resulting in 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere. Indeed about 8% of total global CO2 emissions are from concrete. In 2021, UK cement consumption amounted to 15.6 million metric tons, up from 12.4 million metric tons in 2014.
Typical foundations and ground floors use significant amounts of concrete and can contribute to around 25-30% of the total upfront carbon of the whole building. Using more innovative solutions such as ground screws for foundations is one of the ways of reducing this impact.
In this lunch and learn session with Craig White, CEO at Agile Properties, we will learn about Agile properties’ focus on low carbon foundations, natural building systems, social value, biogenic carbon and modular construction and we will take a deep dive into one of their recent projects, Wolverley School Sports Pavillion.

About Craig White
Craig is a multifaceted professional, combining roles as a designer, developer and entrepreneur to deliver sustainable outcomes in the built environment. With a focus on balancing care for people, planet, and profit, Craig has made significant contributions across the education, community, commercial, and housing sectors. He co-founded White Design and ModCell Straw Technology, both of which emphasise sustainable, low-carbon building solutions.
In 2019, Craig co-founded Agile Property and Homes, a company that innovates in low-carbon, affordable housing. Agile Homes has been recognised for its unique approach, including a partnership with the Ministry of Justice to provide skills and training in Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to prisoners, thereby reducing reoffending rates and homelessness.
Craig’s work is underpinned by systems thinking, optimising environmental, societal, and economic outcomes. He is an experienced leader with board-level experience in various sectors, including design, construction, and research. As a public speaker and communicator, Craig effectively engages diverse stakeholders in sustainable, community-led housing projects.
He is also a senior lecturer at the University of the West of England, leading the Sustainability Unit for post-graduate architecture. Craig’s research interests include low-carbon, bio-based materials and prefabricated building systems, contributing to projects funded by Innovate UK and the European Commission. His work with ModCell has earned international recognition for innovation in sustainable construction.
Craig has held various influential roles, including as a Design Advice consultant with the Carbon Trust and a member of Innovate UK’s Low Impact Building Innovation Platform. His commitment to sustainable design is further demonstrated through his involvement in initiatives like the We Can Make Project and the Modern Flying Factories model.
