Join the Architects Climate Action Network online launch of the Less Monoculture, More Biodiversity campaign. Hear from ACAN Sweden on how industrial forestry and timber production affect biodiversity, climate, and social justice, and what can be learnt from alternative practices.
Timber is, quite rightly, promoted as the future for low-carbon, sustainable construction. The reality, however, is much more nuanced than a simple substitution exercise.
Focusing on Sweden, one of the UK’s key suppliers of construction timber, the event will explore the impacts of current extractive forestry practices under a growing demand, the gaps in legislation and certification that enable them, and case studies of alternative practices that can replace these.
The discussions will include:
- the global picture of timber supply and production, the history behind it and politics today
- the volume based, industrial value chain and its impacts on climate, biodiversity and timber
- alternative craft-based value chains – their potential and challenges with examples from Sweden
- ACAN’s campaign response ‘more biodiversity, less monoculture’
Speakers:
Oscar Carlsson, Björg Form & Arkitektur
Maria Carlsson, Björg Form & Arkitektur and ACAN Sweden
Anna Holst, ACAN Sweden
Malin Nylander, ACAN Sweden
Whether you’re an architect, joiner, supplier, campaigner, student or concerned individual, this event offers insight into the often opaque practices of timber production and specification, and what we can do to change them.
