Summary: 2026 Reducing Plastics in Construction Summit

The ASBP’s 2026 Reducing Plastics in Construction Summit brought together researchers, campaigners, consultants and manufacturers to explore one of the built environment’s growing challenges: the environmental and human health impacts of plastics. While discussions acknowledged that plastics continue to play an important role in construction, the overarching message was that the industry must become far more conscious of where plastics are used, how they affect people and ecosystems, and where viable alternatives already exist.

Setting the Scene: Why Plastics Matter in Construction

Opening the session, Katherine Adams (ASBP) highlighted how ASBP’s plastics work has evolved over the last seven years. Historically, much of the discussion around plastics in construction focused on waste, packaging and resource efficiency. This year’s event placed a stronger emphasis on understanding the environmental and health implications of plastics throughout the building lifecycle and exploring practical actions the industry can take to reduce dependence on plastic products where appropriate.

The webinar formed part of ASBP’s wider Reducing Plastics in Construction programme, which has delivered guidance, case studies, events, competitions and tools aimed at supporting lower-plastic construction practices.

The Global Plastic Challenge

Charlotte Stalder, Earth Action & Plastic Footprint Network

Charlotte Stalder opened the technical presentations by outlining the global scale of plastic pollution. Plastic production continues to rise rapidly, with around 460 million tonnes produced annually and projections suggesting this could triple by 2060. Despite decades of effort, only around 9% of plastic waste is currently recycled. Construction and building activities account for approximately 19% of total plastic pollution, making the sector a critical area for intervention.

Measuring Plastic Leakage

A major focus of Charlotte’s presentation was the importance of quantifying plastic leakage and establishing consistent methodologies for measuring plastic footprints. Through the Plastic Footprint Network, Earth Action is working to standardise how organisations measure, disclose and reduce plastic pollution across sectors.

She emphasised that understanding where plastics leak into the environment is essential for identifying where interventions will have the greatest impact. Accurate measurement allows organisations to move beyond general ambitions and target reductions in the most problematic areas.

Paint: A Hidden Plastic Pollution Problem

One of the most eye-opening findings presented came from Earth Action’s research on paint. While paint is rarely discussed in mainstream conversations about plastic pollution, the research found that paint is a major source of microplastic leakage.

Key findings included:

  • Approximately 18.6 million tonnes of plastics are used annually in paints.
  • Around 40% of that plastic eventually leaks into the environment.
  • Leakage occurs during application, wear and tear, removal, end-of-life disposal and through unused paint waste.
  • Paint is a major contributor to global microplastic pollution in both terrestrial and marine environments.

Charlotte also highlighted how research can drive policy. Findings from earlier paint studies contributed to engagement with the European Commission and helped support recent regulatory developments under EU REACH requirements relating to microplastic emissions and reporting.

Plastics as a Human Health Issue

Sian Sutherland, A Plastic Planet

Sian Sutherland delivered perhaps the most provocative and passionate presentation of the day, arguing that discussions about plastics should move beyond waste management and focus much more heavily on human health impacts.

Moving Beyond Recycling

Sian challenged the idea that recycling alone can solve the plastics crisis, arguing that efforts should be focused on “turning off the tap” by reducing plastic production and consumption at source. A Plastic Planet’s work focuses on identifying commercially viable alternatives and helping businesses transition away from unnecessary plastic use.

The Health Argument

A core theme of Sian’s presentation was that health science may become the catalyst for more meaningful action on plastics.

She highlighted concerns including:

  • Widespread exposure to plastic-associated chemicals.
  • The presence of plastics and plastic-related chemicals throughout everyday environments.
  • Links between endocrine-disrupting chemicals and fertility concerns.
  • Growing scientific interest in the impacts of microplastics and their associated chemical loads.

Sian stressed that plastics should not be viewed simply as a material but as complex mixtures of thousands of chemicals, many of which have not been thoroughly tested for human health impacts. She noted that only a fraction of the chemicals used in plastics have been comprehensively assessed.

Plastic Free Babies Campaign

A significant part of the presentation focused on A Plastic Planet’s new Plastic Free Babies initiative.

The campaign argues that the first 1,000 days of life represent a critical developmental period and seeks greater attention on exposure to plastic-associated chemicals in maternity wards, neonatal units and infant products. The campaign calls for stronger policy action, public awareness and industry engagement to reduce unnecessary exposures during early life.

Sian’s overarching message was that protecting human health—particularly the health of future generations—may be the most powerful driver for accelerating change.

Managing Microplastics in Construction

Ben Stride (Ramboll) & Joanne Kwan (CIRIA)

Ben Stride and Joanne Kwan presented what is believed to be the UK’s first dedicated guidance on managing microplastics in construction projects.

The work was commissioned by CIRIA and developed with the aim of providing practical guidance for the industry on assessing and reducing microplastic risks.

Why the Guidance Matters

While construction is one of the largest users of plastics, there is currently very limited guidance available internationally on managing microplastic releases from construction activities.

Their draft guidance examines:

  • Key construction materials and their microplastic risks.
  • Environmental and health impacts.
  • Plastic procurement and tracking practices.
  • Risk assessment methodologies.
  • Practical mitigation measures during project delivery.

Key Materials of Concern

The guidance identifies several areas of particular interest, including:

  • Paints and coatings.
  • Floor coverings.
  • Packaging materials.
  • Membranes and sheetings.
  • Road and tyre wear particles.
  • Insulation products.
  • Adhesives and sealants.

Practical Recommendations

The proposed framework encourages organisations to:

  • Reduce the use of high-risk plastics wherever possible.
  • Improve procurement and material tracking.
  • Implement dedicated storage, washing and containment areas on site.
  • Improve worker awareness and training.
  • Strengthen waste management controls.
  • Consider alternative materials during project planning.

The forthcoming guidance represents an important step toward treating plastics not only as functional construction materials, but also as environmental risks that require active management.

Rethinking Paints and Coatings

Michiel Brouns, Brouns & Co

Michiel Brouns focused specifically on paint, describing it as “the plastic we forgot.”

His presentation argued that many modern paints have become so commonplace that people rarely recognise them as plastic products. Modern paints often contain significant amounts of synthetic polymers, effectively making them a liquid plastic coating applied to buildings.

The Legacy of Natural Paints

Drawing on his background in historic building preservation, Michiel contrasted modern synthetic paints with traditional coatings such as:

  • Linseed oil paints.
  • Lime washes.
  • Clay paints.
  • Casein paints.
  • Silicate-based coatings.

These products were widely used for centuries before the emergence of petrochemical-based paints after the Second World War. According to Michiel, many of these traditional systems remain viable today and can offer advantages including durability, repairability and lower plastic content.

A Different Way of Thinking About Maintenance

Rather than repeatedly stripping and replacing failing coatings, Michiel advocated for maintenance systems that allow finishes to be refreshed and repaired over time, reducing both waste generation and plastic pollution. He argued that many coating solutions already exist and that specification choices made today can significantly reduce reliance on polymer-based products.

Although speakers approached plastics from different perspectives, health impacts emerged as a common thread throughout the event.

Key concerns raised included:

  • The increasing presence of microplastics in human bodies.
  • Exposure to plastic additives through inhalation, ingestion and skin contact.
  • The vulnerability of children and infants during development.
  • Long-term uncertainties relating to chronic exposure.
  • The need for precautionary action even while research continues to evolve.

Several speakers acknowledged that important research gaps remain, particularly around long-term exposure pathways and direct links between specific construction products and health outcomes. At the same time, there was broad agreement that enough evidence now exists to justify reducing unnecessary exposure where practical.

Alternatives and Opportunities

The event was not solely about identifying problems. A clear emphasis was placed on solutions and practical alternatives.

Examples discussed included:

  • Natural paints and coatings.
  • Lower-plastic construction materials.
  • Improved product selection and procurement processes.
  • Better waste management and containment measures.
  • Design approaches that minimise unnecessary plastic use.
  • Lifecycle thinking to avoid simply shifting impacts elsewhere.

Speakers also stressed that alternatives should be assessed holistically, considering durability, maintenance requirements, environmental performance and overall lifecycle impacts rather than focusing on plastic content alone.

Conclusion

The 2026 Reducing Plastics in Construction Summit reinforced that plastics are no longer just a waste or recycling issue. Across research, policymaking and industry practice, attention is shifting toward understanding the broader environmental and health consequences of plastic use in buildings.

From measuring plastic leakage and tackling microplastics, to rethinking paint systems, improving procurement practices and exploring healthier material choices, the webinar highlighted a growing movement towards reducing unnecessary plastics while building a stronger evidence base for future action.
