Meet our finalists...

107 Niddrie Road

107 Niddrie Road is a pre-1919 red sandstone tenement in Govanhill in the south side of Glasgow. Like most traditional Scottish tenements, it consists of eight flats and a communal close and back court.ย The project has been designed by John Gilbert Architects to meet EnerPHit standards and utilises a range of natural materials including wood fibre and sheep’s wool insulation to drastically reduce energy bills for the tenants while providing them with a healthy internal environment.

Harris Academy Sutton

Harris Academy Sutton is a radical prototype for 21st century schools. It sets an impressive sustainability benchmark, easily achieving RIBA 2030 targets for operational carbon emissions and is enabled for net-zero carbon. The UKโ€™s first Passivhaus certified secondary school was designed by Architype and celebrates natural, low carbon materials that bring a calm and inspiring air. A high-quality, elegant and innovative building that sets a demanding yet achievable benchmark for future education projects.

Springfield Meadows

Springfield Meadows is a project of 25 zero-carbon homes located in Southmoor, Oxfordshire. Benefitting from diverse shared outdoor spaces and private gardens, the high-performance homes provide comfortable, low-carbon living, thanks to the use of Greencore Construction‘s innovative hemp-lime Biond Building System. The project has had its One Planet Action Plan endorsed as a Global Leader in One Planet Living by Bioregional, and has eliminated the use of gas utilities to create an all-electric development.

Brimstone - Vastern Timber

Vastern Timberย transform locally grown wood into a stable, long lasting cladding, using thermal modification. This toxin-free process transforms the wood, changing the way it binds with water. The result is Brimstone, a durable, consistent material that resists rot and weathers well.ย The timber used to make Brimstone is harvested responsibly from well-managed UK woodlands. Fast-growing British woods like ash, poplar and sycamore are used, that might otherwise become firewood or biomass.

KEIM Innostar

KEIM Innostar is a revolutionary one coat, interior mineral paint, that is kind to people and planet. Made from natural ingredients, it is solvent free and odour-free; available in white and a palette of colours, and is perfect for quick re-occupancy projects and to create healthy spaces.ย KEIM Innostar is Natureplus certified and has been awarded Cradle to Cradle Certifiedยฎ Silver overall, andย Gold in the categories โ€˜Material Health’, ‘Water Stewardship’ and ‘Social Fairness’.

IOBAC MagTabs

Floor coverings installed using adhesives can be difficult to reuse or recycle on uplift due to contamination from adhesives, resulting in floor coverings being sent for incineration or landfill.ย IOBAC MagTabs address this issue by enabling floor coverings to be affixed securely throughout the life of the installation, yet cleanly and easily uplifted.ย  This reversible fixing mechanism gives flooring a second life, vastly improving flooring circularity and making flooring manufacturersโ€™ take-back schemes easier to implement.ย

10 tonne carbon reduction challenge โ€“ Morgan Sindall

Theย 10 tonne carbon reductionย challenge is part of Morgan Sindall‘s efforts to mitigate climate change by reducing the carbon impact of what and how they build. They challenge their projects in conjunction with their supply chain to reduce their project carbon impact by a minimum of 10 tonnes.

Firstplanit - Sustainable product decisions made easy and accessible for everyone

When it comes to building, every product purchase impacts at many scales โ€“ Environmental, Social, Health and Monetary. Until now, these have never been assessed and assimilated into a holistic impact landscape, set out in a transparent, rigorously researched, data-driven, personalised, user-friendly, free digital format. Firstplanit is doing just that.

Plotting Our Route to Zero โ€“ Whitby Wood

Whitby Wood‘sย Route to Zero interactive infographic plots their route to zero, aiming for 2035, identifies their key target areas to work on, lets them play with the impact of external factors, and holds them to account as they continue to measure progress.
