Speaker Profile

Professor Avtar S Matharu, is Professor of Green Chemistry and Deputy Director Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence’s Prof  Matharu’s research interests to cover the valorisation of a range of materials currently considered ‘waste’, notably unavoidable food supply chain wastes using bespoke technologies such as microwave processing. His research utilises scientific intervention and innovation to alleviate poverty, improve health and environment, and improve water quality. He has overseen several multimillion euro projects in the last 3 years including EPSRC, BBSRC, Innovate UK and ERDF. He has published over 100 scientific articles, supervised over 80 PhD and MSc students.

He is Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier Current Research in Green and Sustainable Chemistry and is Scientific Advisor for the German-led initiative, ISC3 – International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centres. He is recipient of the EAUC Green Gown Award for Research and Development (2013) and Winner of the HEFCE SLabs Award (2014).
