Innovative Mapping and Processes to Advance Construction Timber Transparency

About IMPACTT

Built by Nature, a network and grant-making fund dedicated to accelerating the transformation toward timber and bio-based building, launched its “From Forest to Frame” Challenge. With a goal to improve transparency around the climate impacts of decisions across the bio-based construction value chain, the initiative awarded €330,000 to three groundbreaking projects, including ours—IMPACTT: Innovative Mapping and Processes to Advance Construction Timber Transparency.

ASBP and project partners are investigating how biodiversity and forest data can be integrated into the PEFC Certification system—the world’s largest certification for sustainable forest-based products. Our goal is to trace mass timber elements in buildings back to the forests of origin, where active biodiversity monitoring and management have been conducted. We aim to make this connection accessible to building users by exploring how QR codes on buildings can provide insights into the forests supplying the timber.

Additionally, this project addresses critical information gaps within the mass timber supply chain, with DoubleHelix leading efforts to create digital mapping tools that enhance supply chain transparency. Through stakeholder interviews, we are also assessing industry knowledge of sustainable forest management, aiming to identify learning gaps and offer resources to bridge them.

As biodiversity measurement evolves rapidly, and with the UK government planning to implement Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) regulations for developers, our work is especially timely. Mass timber offers a sustainable alternative to conventional materials like concrete and steel, with the potential to significantly reduce construction’s environmental impact.

This project builds on our previous work, including the Mass Timber Insurance Playbook, available for free on our website.
