Workstack: Large Projects Finalist – Exemplar Sustainable Buildings Awards

Large Projects finalist in the 2025 Exemplar Sustainable Building Awards. WorkStack is a thoughtful response to the growing pressure on urban industrial land and the rising demand for sustainable, affordable workspace in London. Located in Charlton Riverside, an area undergoing significant regeneration, the building offers a practical and scalable model for how light industrial workspaces can be successfully integrated into dense urban environments.

Designed by dRMM for the Greenwich Enterprise Board, the project combines efficient use of space with a strong focus on environmental and social performance. Its stacked timber structure maximises site utility while maintaining a modest footprint, creating a series of compact yet functional units tailored to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises. Built primarily from cross-laminated timber and serviced by simple, low-impact systems, the building achieves a modest energy demand of 36.4 kWh/m².yr and meets both BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and LETI 2030 design standards.

More than just a technical achievement, WorkStack supports a diverse tenant base and actively fosters social value—encouraging local enterprise, inclusivity, and long-term community benefit. It addresses the immediate needs of SMEs while contributing to broader goals of economic diversity and sustainable urban development.
