Econoblok®

The Econoblok® is a lightweight loadbearing structural construction block, made with up to 85% of recovered waste product. The product is made with recycled paper and cardboard waste sourced locally to the factory mixed with sand and up to 10% cement. Econoblok® has very good thermal and acoustic insulation properties when compared with conventional concrete blocks.

Econoblok® is a low embodied carbon alternative to the conventional aerated concrete block and is supplied directly from Econovate®‘s first production plant based in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, UK. The Econoblok® has been selected as ASBP’s Product of the Month because it provides a low carbon alternative in traditional masonry construction.

What are the benefits?

At a strength of 5N/mm2, Econoblok® is suitable for building up to three floors. The product is created in a patented production process which takes waste paper and cardboard and processes it into a standardised pulp. Econoblok® complies with UK building regulations and has been awarded LABC product certification.

The good thermal and acoustic insulation properties of Econoblok® enables contractors to meet regulations and achieve high performance without losing living space. The workmanship needed to build with the Econoblok® is the same as traditional masonry, thus eliminating the need for special training.

In terms of fixings such as nails and screws Econoblok® behaves like timber. This makes fixing easier and eliminates the cost and time associated with complex substructures whose only purpose is to ease fixing.

The table below summarises the performance of the Econoblok®. The mixture of the raw material used, as well as the production process used to achieve the final product, means that it is also fire, pest and rot resistant, so no additional chemical treatment is needed.

As an example the calculation of U-values for a wall using 100mm of Econoblok® in both leafs, will be able to reach 0.23 W/m2K by using a 50mm insulation layer or 0.17 W/m2K by using a 75mm insulation layer. In both cases, this meets part L of the 2010 building regulations.

The sustainability credentials of the Econoblok® have been calculated in a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted by ARUP. This report demonstrated that the embodied carbon emissions calculated for a typical wall built with the EconoBlok® is -17 kg/m2. The carbon footprint of 1 m2 of wall made with Econoblok® is of 53 Kg/m2.

About the company

After 10 years of development, Econovate have achieved a certified product, which has not only passed numerous industry tests and has an LABC certified registration with warranty. LABC states that Econoblok is for use generally in situations where a concrete block can be used, but not for use externally unless protected or for use below a damp proof course.

EconoBlok® is ISO 9001 certified and is also in the process to be awarded ISO 14001 and BES 6001.  The company is currently erecting some example buildings to demonstrate the different benefits of the Econoblok®.
